Heat exchangers
All condensers and heat exchangers develop leaks over time, and some of these can lead to contamination or inefficient operation. Boiler casing leaks also give rise to energy loss, as can the breakdown of insulation or lagging.
Leakage or pressure leakage can be quickly located using technologies such as helium leak detection or ultrasound. Fittings, flanges, tubes and valves can all be routinely scanned for leakage.
For particularly rigorous leak-checking of condensers (e.g. seawater-cooled condensers in coastal power stations), then a portable helium leak detector may be the instrument of choice.
Thermal imaging can also show areas where insulation is damaged or defective. Blocked pipes can be spotted from a safe distance, as can cracks and coke build-up in the boiler tubes.
