ConocoPhillips case study

Ultrasonic detector case study by Glenn Robinson

This case study was written by Glenn Robinson at ConocoPhillips. Glenn is a mechanical technician, and wrote this piece prior to purchasing an Ultraprobe 2000.

"On an offshore platform, there are three 'RB211s'. One of these developed a leak on the air cooling system. Due to the intense heat, we were unable to use liquid leak testing, and the leak was impossible to find using normal methods due to machine metal faces."

"We therefore decided to rent an intrinsically safe Ultraprobe 2000 and found the leak within seconds. After repairing the leak, another scan was done of the area and I was amazed at how sensitive the equipment was since we found another three leaks that we were not aware of. Consequently, we were able to repair all of these leaks at the same time."

"On completion of the repairs, I was asked for my opinion of the performance of the Ultraprobe. My immediate response was: 'we must buy one of these for permanent usage!'. As we can also use the Ultraprobe to detect bearing problems on rotating equipment, I was extremely impressed with it."

"My overall view of the equipment is this: it is advantageous, user friendly, has easy to follow instructions and is definitely worth investing in. I have informed many people of this exceptional piece of equipment and advised them to use it if possible."
