Iggesund Paperboard case study

Ultrasonic detector case study by Glyn Rowland-Jones

Iggesund Paperboard in Workington manufactures folding boxboard. The site employs around 500 people, and has a capacity of 260,000 tonnes. Glyn Rowland-Jones kindly wrote the following piece, which talks about the success they've had using the Ultraprobe 201 Grease Caddy to prevent over-lubrication of bearings

"Correct bearing lubrication is essential to maintaining operation, where over lubricating can cause failures as well as dry running bearings. Some leading bearing manufacturers state that approximately 30% of failures are due to improper lubrication."

"The Grease Caddy allows for the ideal amount of lubrication to be applied to the bearing. Since using the equipment, we haven't experienced a single bearing failure due to lubrication issues."

"The instrument itself is simple to use (conveniently placed on the grease gun), and you can clearly hear when enough grease has been added. It provides confidence in the lubrication routes, and removes the urge to add an extra shot of grease for luck."

"Although we didn't experience much downtime caused by bearing failures, the main benefit that we've noted is that the number of alarms the condition monitoring team find when out on their routes has been reduced, allowing them to focus on preventing serious failures. It has also reduced the amount of lubrication used on these routes."
