Variotec 8 hydrogen detector

The Variotec 8 is a portable and battery-powered hydrogen leak detector, which is able to detect very small leaks in objects by using a tracer gas.

A mixture of hydrogen (5%) and nitrogen (95%) is introduced into the area with a suspected leak, and the gas will attempt to escape at the leak point and make its way into the atmosphere, where it can be detected by the highly sensitive Variotec 8 detector.

The use of a trace gas is a proven and successful technique for identifying a wide variety of leaks, including...
  • Aeroplane wings, engine blocks, valves, etc.
  • Heating systems and pressurised telephone cables.
  • SF6-insulated or oil-filled power cable ducts.
  • And water distribution pipes.
This particular mix of gas is non-corrosive, non-flammable and non-toxic (approved for use in water networks). It is also readily available and competitively priced.

Hydrogen is also the smallest and lightest molecule that can permeate all surfaces, including concrete and tarmac. Just like water, hydrogen will take the easiest route to the surface, so it is wise to consider the make-up of the area when deciding where the leak location is likely to be.

Using one of a selection of probes, the Variotec 8 is capable of detecting gas concentrations down to very low levels of parts per million, so as to pinpoint very small traces of gas and hone in on the leak. The LCD display is also bright, responsive and uncluttered, allowing the operator to quickly observe changes in the reading.
